Tachylite and Minette

Minette and Tachylite

Definition

Definition
Tachylite is a vitreous form of basaltic volcanic glass. This glass is formed naturally by the rapid cooling of molten basalt
Minette is a variety of Lamprophyre and is porphyritic alkaline igneous rock which is mainly dominated by biotite and potassic feldspar

Formation

Formation
Tachylite is a fine-grained, hard rock which is a type of metasomatite, essentially altered basalt. It forms with or without crystallization, either below the surface as intrusive rocks or on the surface as extrusive rocks.
Minette formation takes place deep beneath the Earth’s surface at around 150 to 450 kms, and are erupted rapidly and violently.

All about Tachylite and Minette Properties

Know all about Tachylite and Minette properties here. All properties of rocks are important as they define the type of rock and its application. Tachylite and Minette belong to Igneous Rocks.Texture of Tachylite is Vitreous whereas that of Minette is Porphyritic. Tachylite appears Glassy and Minette appears Dull, Banded and Foilated. The luster of Tachylite is resinous while that of Minette is subvitreous to dull. Tachylite is available in black, dark brown colors whereas Minette is available in black, bluish - grey, brown, dark greenish - grey, green, grey colors. The commercial uses of Tachylite are cemetery markers, creating artwork and that of Minette are an oil and gas reservoir, as a feed additive for livestock, gemstone, metallurgical flux, production of lime, soil conditioner, source of magnesia (mgo).
