dacitic magma wordt gevormd door de subductie van de jonge oceanische korst onder een dikke felsic continentale plaat. Verder wordt de oceanische korst hydrothermisch veranderd kwarts en natrium toegevoegd.
Olieschalie ontstaat op de bodem van zeeën en meren. De vorming begint met organisch afval dat zich ophoopt op de bodem van een meer of zee. Dit afval wordt vervolgens met behulp van hoge temperatuur en druk omgezet in gesteente.
