Lignite appears Veined or Pebbled and Laterite appears Rough and Banded. The luster of Lignite is dull to vitreous to submetallic while that of Laterite is dull. Lignite is available in black, brown, dark brown, grey, light to dark grey colors whereas Laterite is available in brown, buff, red colors. The commercial uses of Lignite are electricity generation and that of Laterite are an oil and gas reservoir, source of bauxite, used in aquariums.
