Characteristics of Phyllite
Many rocks have distinct characteristics. Some of the Properties of Phyllite are hardness, structure, streak, fracture etc. Phyllite is significant as it is composed of minerals and has variety of uses in our day to day life. The characteristics of Phyllite plays an important role in its identification.
The hardness of Phyllite is 1-2 on Moh’s hardness scale. Rocks according to their hardness are divided into:Hard Rocks, Soft Rocks and Rocks with Medium Hardness.
Fracture of Phyllite rock is conchoidal. Its specific heat capacity is Not Available. Phyllite is heat resistant, pressure resistant, water resistant. Some of its uses are:
- Interior Uses: Decorative aggregates, Floor tiles, Homes and Interior decoration.
- Construction Industry: As dimension stone, Building houses or walls, Cement manufacture, Construction aggregate, For road aggregate, Raw material for the manufacture of mortar, Roadstone.

More About Phyllite
Phyllite is a type of Metamorphic Rocks. The color of rock is one of its important property. Phyllite rock is available in black to grey, light greenish grey colors. It is Crinkled or Wavy in appearance. The Phyllite mineral content includes Albite, Alusite, Amphibole, Apatite, Biotite, Chlorite, Epidote, Feldspar, Garnet, Graphite, Hornblade, Kyanite, Micas, Muscovite or Illite, Porphyroblasts, Quartz, Sillimanite, Staurolite, Talc, Zircon. Its compound content includes CaO, Carbon Dioxide, MgO. Let’s move on to the types of Phyllite. Phyllite rock does not have any types.
Fossils are the remains of prehistoric plants or animals which are embedded in rock and preserved in petrified form. Fossils are found only in sedimentary rocks. As Phyllite belongs to Metamorphic Rocks, fossils are not found in it.
