Characteristics of Laterite
Many rocks have distinct characteristics. Some of the Properties of Laterite are hardness, structure, streak, fracture etc. Laterite is significant as it is composed of minerals and has variety of uses in our day to day life. The characteristics of Laterite plays an important role in its identification.
The hardness of Laterite is 2 on Moh’s hardness scale. Rocks according to their hardness are divided into:Hard Rocks, Soft Rocks and Rocks with Medium Hardness.
Fracture of Laterite rock is conchoidal. Its specific heat capacity is Not Available. Laterite is heat resistant, pressure resistant. Some of its uses are:
- Interior Uses: Decorative aggregates, Flooring and Interior decoration.
- Construction Industry: Cobblestones, For road aggregate, Landscaping, Roadstone.

More About Laterite
Laterite is a type of Sedimentary Rocks. The color of rock is one of its important property. Laterite rock is available in brown, buff, red colors. It is Rough and Banded in appearance. The Laterite mineral content includes Aluminum Oxides, Biotite, Hematite, Hornblade, Iron Oxides, Manganese Oxides, Micas, Muscovite or Illite, Plagioclase, Pyroxene. Its compound content includes Aluminium Oxide, CaO, Iron(III) Oxide, FeO, Potassium Oxide, MgO, MnO, Sodium Oxide, Phosphorus Pentoxide, Silicon Dioxide, Titanium Dioxide. Let’s move on to the types of Laterite. Laterite rock does not have any types.
Fossils are the remains of prehistoric plants or animals which are embedded in rock and preserved in petrified form. Fossils are found only in sedimentary rocks. As Laterite belongs to Sedimentary Rocks, fossils are found in it.
