Peridotites can be formed in two ways: as mantle rocks formed during the accretion and differentiation of the Earth or as cumulate rocks formed by precipitation of olivine and pyroxenes from basaltic magmas.

Peridotite Formation

Peridotite formation took place millions of years ago. There are a variety of Peridotite Uses and the Peridotite Reserves are found in many countries around the world. The rocks in the earth’s crust continuously undergo changes in their composition which leads to formation of other rocks. Each rock has a unique formation process. Formation of Peridotite is explained below:

  • Peridotites can be formed in two ways: as mantle rocks formed during the accretion and differentiation of the Earth or as cumulate rocks formed by precipitation of olivine and pyroxenes from basaltic magmas.

Peridotite Composition

Every rock is composed of one or more minerals. Peridotite composition which can be further divided into mineral and compound content. The Peridotite mineral content includes Amphibole, Chromite, Garnet, Magnesium, Olivine, Phlogopite, Plagioclase, Pyroxene. Transformation of Peridotite

Every rock on earth undergoes transformation process. Peridotite is a type of Igneous Rocks. Transformation of Peridotite takes place in three steps- Metamorphism, Weathering and Erosion.

  • Metamorphism of Peridotite:- Metamorphism is change in arrangement of minerals and texture in the pre-existing rocks. Peridotite rock undergoes metamorphism. Unlike in formation of Peridotite, the rock does not melt into liquid magma. Peridotite undergoes burial metamorphism, cataclastic metamorphism, contact metamorphism, hydrothermal metamorphism, impact metamorphism and regional metamorphism.
  • Weathering of Peridotite:- The breaking down of rocks when they come in contact with the Earth's atmosphere, ecology and water is called as weathering. Talking about weathering of Peridotite, this rock undergoes weathering. Weathering of Igneous rocks leads to formation of Sedimentary rocks. Weathering is further classified as chemical and mechanical weathering. Peridotite undergoes biological weathering, chemical weathering and mechanical weathering.
  • Peridotite Erosion:- After formation of Peridotite, let’s move on to Peridotite Erosion. The weathered small fragments of rock are carried from one place to other by a process called erosion. Peridotite rock undergoes Erosion. Erosion is one of the important aspects in the life cycle of a rock. Peridotite undergoes chemical erosion.
